Violinist, pianist to play Palladium
Artur Girsky, principal second violin of the Florida Orchestra, and pianist Eugenia Pilyavina play music of Beethoven, Franck and Sarasate in St. Petersburg. Girsky, who joined the orchestra in November, graduated from the Moscow Conservatory. From 1993 to 1997, he was concertmaster of the Moscow Soloist Chamber Orchestra under Yuri Bashmet. The concert is at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Palladium. Tickets: $8-$15. (727) 822-3590.
A musical Huck
It's not farfetched to think of Roger Miller as the George Gershwin of country music, a brilliant songwriter who died too young. Miller wrote a truckload of songs for other performers and had a string of his own hits, including Dang Me, Chug-A-Lug and King of the Road, in the 1960s.
When Miller turned to the Broadway musical he was a breath of fresh air for a floundering art form. His Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn garnered seven Tony Awards after it opened in 1985, but it was the only musical written by Miller, who died at 56 in 1992.
Jason Shipman, left, is Huck, and Trevor Nicholas is Jim in a Big River tour that has performances at 8 p.m. Friday and 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday at Mahaffey Theater. Tickets: $24-$49. (727) 892-5767.
Trio with voice
As Trio Con Voce, violinist Kyung Sun Lee, left, and pianist Brian Suits, who are husband and wife, join with soprano Jennifer Aylmer for a concert in St. Petersburg. On the wide-ranging program are works of Bach, Liszt, Saint-Saens, Grieg, Strauss, Bartok, Gershwin, Porter and Bolcom. The threesome perform at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Museum of Fine Arts. Tickets: $7 and $15. (727) 896-2667.
USF spring concert
Dances by choreographers Gerri Houlihan and Gabriela Darvash are featured in the University of South Florida dance department's spring concert, titled "Imprint," for the critical role a dance teacher plays in the life of a dancer.
Darvash, a longtime ballet teacher in New York, will set a suite to music by Rossini. "I designed it to give the cast an opportunity to enjoy themselves on stage, to express their happiness on stage," she says.
Houlihan's 4X4 was originally choreographed for her own company, Houlihan and Dancers, which she directed for 11 years when she taught at the New World School of the Arts in Miami.
The program also includes works by USF faculty members John Parks, Jeanne Travers, Sandra Robinson and Lynne Wimmer. Pictured are Megan Hillman and Leah Ratliff in a Travers dance.
Performances are at 8 p.m. today through Saturday and 10 p.m. Sunday in Theatre 2 on USF's Tampa campus. Repeated Feb. 14-16. Tickets: $5 and $10. (813) 974-2323.
