A satisfying serving of Cake

A satisfying serving of Cake

Cake, the quirky pop act from Sacramento, has been attracting fans with its bouncy rhythms and clever lyrics since 1995. Hear the Cake-y sound on Comfort Eagle, the act's fourth album, filled with sly arrangements, shuffling beats, trumpet blasts and songwriter John McCrea's droll wordplay.

The band scored big time in the past with hits The Distance and Frank Sinatra, and the vibe continues on this album, which combines country rock, hip-hop and other genre-busting shenanigans.

Cake, like Weezer, makes oddball pop for people who can follow a narrative. It's not your typical radio fare, and thank goodness for that.

Cake performs at 7 p.m. Sunday at Jannus Landing, 16 Second St. N, St. Petersburg. Tickets are $25. (813) 287-8844 or (727) 898-2100.
