Clearwater receives boost from bench

CLEARWATER -- If the ball keeps bouncing Clearwater's way, there could be as many as a half-dozen games left in the season. And don't think that every last player on the Tornadoes squad will not be ready.

Thursday night in the district semifinal, top-seeded Clearwater jumped on Palm Harbor U. (12-16) early, earning a chance to get valuable minutes for its cavernous bench. In the first half alone nine different players scored as the Tornadoes rolled to a 79-30 win.

Clearwater will play Largo for the district title at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Countryside. Second-seeded Largo beat Pinellas Park 73-46 in the early semifinal.

Against PHU, Clearwater (28-1) took a 10-point lead five minutes into the game, and coach Tom Shaneyfelt began going to the bench. Five reserves chimed in with quality minutes, pushing Clearwater's first-half lead to as many as 36 points.

For the game the non-starters outscored the Hurricanes' entire team 32-30.

"Anisha Turman and Talya Adams in particular are coming off the bench and doing a real good job getting after it," Shaneyfelt said.

In the other semifinal, Pinellas Park (19-8) gave Largo a brief scare, as a hot second quarter led to just a 34-31 halftime deficit. But in the third quarter the Packers (22-3) shifted back into gear, scoring on their first six possessions.

Bradenton Christian avenged two regular-season losses and pulled off the upset of the tournament Thursday, beating No. 1 seed Shorecrest 43-41.

The fifth-seeded Panthers scored the game's last 16 points and shut out the Chargers (15-4) in the fourth quarter.

In the earlier semifinal, Sarasota Out-of-Door Academy cruised to a 54-43 win over Keswick Christian (9-15).
