Seminole pins down district win

SEMINOLE -- Pardon the Seminole wrestlers if they needed time to get re-acquainted with their county opponents Thursday.

After all, the Warhawks had wrestled just six dual meets this season, most against out-of-county competition.

The unfamiliarity made the Class 2A, District 10 tournament a reunion of sorts for Seminole. The outcome, though, was familiar as the Warhawks scored 211 1/2 points to win their second district title in the past three seasons.

Seminole wrestled so few dual meets because it opted to participate in tournaments. The Warhawks were in seven tournaments this season, a move coach Jim Berrill made to allow his wrestlers to see tough competition all season.

The strategy worked, as Seminole qualified all 14 wrestlers for next week's regional tournament in Punta Gorda and had the district title wrapped up early in the finals.

The Warhawks had six champions -- Travis Thompson (119 pounds), Josh Detlor (130), Matt Lowery (145), T.J. Layfield (160), Joey Fabrizio (189) and Ed Leverenz (275).

Northeast scored 146 points to finish as a district runner-up for the second season in a row. Mike Shoopman (112), John Milo (135), Kenny Luu (152) and Derek Mallen (171) won titles for the Vikings.

Pete Lenore (103) and Nate Naumann (125) of Boca Ciega and Chris Feinberg (140) and Jay Medina (215) of Dixie Hollins' also won district titles.
