TAMPA -- University of Tampa senior guard Jon Brown has been named the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Month for January.

Brown led the fifth-ranked Spartans to an 8-0 record last month. Averaging 16.5 points per game, Brown scored in double figures six times and led the Spartans in scoring on four occasions. In Tampa's final two games in January, Brown played a key role in crucial SSC wins, scoring 27 points and sinking the game-wining basket with three seconds remaining in an 81-79 win against Florida Southern.

He also scored 22 points in a 68-48 win against Eckerd.

During his outstanding month, the 6-foot-1 point guard also averaged 3.9 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game. He also shot 47.3 percent from the field and 82.2 percent from the free-throw line.

"(Jon) comes to play in every game and came up with some tremendous plays," said Tampa coach Richard Schmidt.

"Jon is a great point guard and much of our team's success may be credited to Jon for his ability to do a number of things to help this team win."

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Center April Hinton's week was almost perfect. She was named the SSC Women's Player of the Week as the Spartans split two contests.

Hinton averaged 22 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals and one blocked shot during the week. She also shot 80 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free-throw line. Hinton scored a career-high 18 points on eight of nine shooting in an 89-68 win against Eckerd Jan. 30, and then responded Feb. 2 with a career-high 26 points on eight of 11 shooting in a 77-75 road loss to Barry. BASEBALL: Centerfielder Michael Burruezo was named SSC Player of the Week after batting .818, going 9-of-11, in the Spartans' season-opening three-game, non-conference series against Lynn. The junior pounded three home runs, knocked in seven runs, added three doubles, a stolen base and scored six times.
