Traylor keys surge as FSU snaps skid

TALLAHASSEE -- April Traylor scored 16, all in the second half, to lead Florida State to a 60-55 win over Maryland Thursday.

The Seminoles trailed most of the second half until Traylor's 3-pointer with 3:44 left gave them a 52-51 lead. Florida State never trailed again as it snapped a five-game losing streak and won for the second time in 11 games.

"I'm really proud of the team and how they really worked to overcome adversity," FSU coach Sue Semrau said. "I think the wall kept getting taller and taller that we were going to have to hurdle to come out with a win. That was a great basketball game and a great team effort on our team's part, and I'm just really proud of how they've handled things that have been very difficult for us as of late."

Maryland lost its fourth straight game and has dropped seven of eight.

FSU senior point guard Petra Hofmann was held out of the game after the NCAA raised a question about her amateur status.

Hofmann, 22, was a member of a first-division team in her native Hungary before coming to the United States to play at Cowley County (Kan.) Community College. The NCAA informed FSU late Monday there could have been professionals on the club team, which would make anyone on the team -- even if she were not paid, as FSU believes -- ineligible for intercollegiate athletics.

"Until we get more facts, we've decided not to play her," said Bob Minnix, FSU's associate athletic director for compliance and legal affairs.

He said he's confident FSU would not have to forfeit games, including those from last season's NCAA Tournament.
