Signings

Beth McGowan of Keswick Christian has signed to play volleyball at Brevard College in North Carolina.

McGowan, right-side hitter and part-time setter at Keswick, was second on the team in kills and assists this season. She played in the Pinellas senior All-Star game. According to Brevard coach Brenda Skeffington, McGowan will assume the primary setting responsibilities and will also be hitting right side.

Softball

The Lady Rage, a 14-and-under B team based in Clearwater, recently placed second at the Independent Softball Association Miken Winterfest state tournament.

The Clearwater Bullets won the 14-and-under and 16-and-under A divisions.

The Clearwater Bullets 18-and-under red team recently won the Independent Softball Association Winter Nationals tournament in Winter Haven.

The Bullets went 4-0-1 and gave up five runs in five games. Jennifer Clark and Jessica Byrn pitched consecutive one-hit victories to start the Bullets in pool play. The Bullets then tied the Tallahassee Merchants with Amy McGathey and Clark combining for a three-hitter.

Single elimination started with Byrn striking out seven to beat the Florida Mustangs 3-1. Jessica Hull and Ashley Bullion drove in last-inning runs to seal the victory. The Bullets downed the Rascals in a nine-inning tiebreaker for the championship. Danielle Fry drove in the game winner. Clark pitched a three-hitter and McGathey and Stacey Lyon provided strong defense.

Soccer

The Strictly Soccer program, based in St. Petersburg, earned two championship titles plus a finalist honor recently at the Ormond Beach Challenge 2002. The under-10 boys and under-12 boys retained their trophies from last year with a round of shutouts.

The under-11 girls reached the final game, only to lose on a penalty shootout to Palm Beach United.

The Azalea Eagles 14-and-under girls team recently won the Ormond Beach Challenge 2002 tournament by defeating the Titusville Titans in a sudden-death shootout. The Titans had beaten the Eagles once, scoring the only goal allowed by the Eagles during pool play.

The championship game ended in a scoreless tie through regulation and two overtimes.

The Eagles finally took a 3-2 lead during the shootout and keeper Kari Patton smothered the Titans' last shot to clinch the win.
