TAMPA -- Six weeks and more than $2-million later, the section of the Veterans Expressway damaged in a fiery gasoline spill Dec. 28 reopened Friday afternoon.

Cars began traveling the southbound Veterans bridge over Independence Parkway about 12:30 p.m. after road workers finished dismantling the barricades that had rerouted traffic during the reconstruction.

Christa Deason, a DOT spokeswoman, predicted a collective sigh of relief from the 40,000 drivers who were forced to find alternate routes.
