REDINGTON SHORES -- A 69-year-old woman from Massachusetts was killed by a drunken driver Saturday afternoon while trying to get into her car, which was parked along Gulf Boulevard, authorities said.

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office arrested the driver, 48-year-old Kenneth Murfinger of 11705 Third St. E, Treasure Island. Murfinger was charged with DUI manslaughter. He also was arrested on a previously existing warrant that charged him with passing a worthless check.

Sheriff's deputies said Murfinger was driving his Jeep Cherokee south on Gulf near 177th Avenue about 3:45 p.m. Saturday when he ran into Elizabeth Logan, 69, of Marlborough, Mass.

Logan had been staying at the nearby Suncoaster Motel with a friend, Gloria Cunningham, 74.

At the time of the crash, Logan was getting into her parked Dodge Stratus, and Cunningham was getting into the passenger's seat, deputies said. The impact of the crash knocked Cunningham out of the car.

Logan was pronounced dead at Suncoast Hospital, and Cunningham was treated and released. Deputies said they arrested Murfinger after he admitted he had been drinking.
