SEMINOLE -- Sawgrass Lanes of Sunrise led the 49-team field after the first qualifying round in the ABCBrunswick World Team Challenge Saturday at Seminole Lanes.
Tampa's Don Yoshihara and Darin Hays joined Craig Auerbach, Arturo Quintero and Andres Gomez in toppling 6,478 pins through the six qualifying games. PK Limited of Davie was second at 6,363 and Vic Telemarketing, Bayport N.Y., was third at 6,286. Defending champion Brian Brazeau's Pro Shop of Ocala with 6,281 rounded out the top four automatically seeded into today's final.
Teams from fifth through 13th roll 10 Baker system games beginning at 9 a.m. today, with the top four joining the seeded teams in two-game, Baker match play starting at 11:30. The top three squads advance to the Baker final at 3:30.
There is no admission charge today.
Sawgrass Lanes led from wire to wire, with a 1,088 first game, then stretching its lead with a 1,197 third game. Gomez was high man with a 690 series. PK Limited was second after its first game, but could not gain ground.
Vic Telemarketing jumped from fifth to third after a 1,133 third game and Brazeau's advanced from seventh to gain the seeded four after a 1,141 fifth game.
The highest area qualifying team was two-time champion Top of the Line Pool Service from Clearwater with a 6,177 total. James Campbell captains the squad of retired five-time PBA winner Tom Milton, pro Kent Wagner, Jeff Busiere and Brian Halstrom.
Tampa's Green Parrot Pub made the cut and Hollywood's It's About Time was the 13th and last qualifier.
