It must be those long Scandinavian winters that send you around the bend. Okay, I take that back. It's not fair to stereotype a whole country based on the few groovy Swedes I've met, although the author of this site pushes the envelope. No matter, here you'll find some no-nonsense computer advice. Does your disk need to be defragmented? Grab some steel wool and follow the step-by-step instructions. The information is good, but the English spelling and grammar may make you pause. It's fun for all.

Ready, set, cheese

www.CheeseRacing.org/

May the gods, whomever you worship, bless this wonderful time of year in this fabulous part of the world. It's that time when a young man's fancy turns to thoughts of other things, such as cheese racing. The premise is to throw shrink-wrapped cheese on a grill and see which participant's wrapper expands the fastest. While it may not be an event of Olympic proportions, it has a certain appeal, you must admit. Even if you don't actually play the game, just get outside. It's wonderful out there.

Is it warm in here?

I have a good friend who should be listed in the phone book under "cantankerous" instead of his real name. Having lived through the Depression, he's highly skeptical of all this modern snake oil. He even predicted the burst of the dot-com bubble long before it was popular. He is also convinced the global warming issue is, in his words, "a crock." I'm on the fence, but I admit I'm enthralled by this site on the subject. If nothing else, visit for the eye candy, but if you've got the time, read the words and spaces.

Peeking inside a PC

www.OverClockers.com/tips821/

I have a penchant for putting odd stickers on my computers, which is about the extent of my hardware modifications. I've toyed with the idea of putting a plexiglass window in a favorite PC, but the hardware depreciates faster than ice cream in July. So I tip my fedora in awe at what the real studs of computer modification are doing. Consider this site: These groovy individuals have -- gasp! -- voided their warranties and added a window into their hard disks. It also has an abundant warning about the potential hazards of trying this at home. But it is an entertaining and fun peek of where others dare to tread.

A search tool

www.torrez.org/projects/nutshell/

Bugs aside, one of the nifty things about having Internet Explorer on Windows is the applications that people write to extend it, such as having a small area that will search Google, Amazon, Dictionary.com and so forth. Here's a great one that's free and that searches all of those sites plus a few more. Mac OS 9 and above, of course, have Sherlock, which takes a bit more clicking but can do much of the same thing. But Mac folks are used to doing a bit more clicking anyway.
