2 skaters, 1 name, lots of confusion
By MIKE STEPHENSON, Times Staff Writer
© St. Petersburg Times published February 13, 2002
The yin and yang of the Chinese women's short-track skating team is out of balance.
Too much Yang.
The Chinese team includes two of the top contenders in short-track competition, which begins with today's 1,500 meters, and they're both named Yang Yang. Even the team has trouble keeping them straight.
They're not related, and for a while, they were distinguished by age -- one called "Large," meaning she had more years, and the other "Small."
Not surprisingly, "Large" didn't like the nickname, so the elder Yang chose to use her middle initial and be designated Yang Yang (A). The younger one is Yang Yang (S).
Yang (S) is favored to win the 500 Saturday, and Yang (A) is the favorite in the 1,000 Feb. 23.
Or maybe it's the other way around.
