Leaders give up free ride on bridge

Treasure Island commissioners' unanimous decision Tuesday requires that they will pay to cross the Causeway Bridge - like everyone else.

TREASURE ISLAND -- City commissioners no longer will receive free bridge passes unless they retire with at least 10 years of service and remain residents of the island.

The commission decided Tuesday its members should stop getting a free ride on the Causeway Bridge because they have stopped offering the passes to volunteers. Commissioners dropped the perk after discovering some volunteers were left out.

Only a handful of people, in addition to current city employees, will receive the decals now. This year, the city has distributed 271 passes, which remain good through 2002.

To receive the $30 toll bridge passes in the future, commissioners will have to meet the same criteria as retired city employees. Only a few people will qualify for that perk.
