District honors its outstanding volunteers
Pinellas County Schools' Community Involvement Advisory Council has named 13 Outstanding School Volunteers for 2002. Chosen from a field of 270 nominees, these volunteers were selected for their quantity and quality of service and for their impact on student achievement:
Youth category: Ashley Tantillo, East Lake High; Kimberle Noorbakhsh, Largo High; Leigha Wolsey, Bauder Elementary; and Daniel Miller, Pinellas Central Elementary.
Adult category: Gigi Rahman, McMullen Booth Elementary; Melinda Techler, South Ward Elementary; Martha Bouknecht, Cross Bayou Elementary; and Duane Barto, Kings Highway Elementary.
Senior category: Margaret Bock, Paul B. Stephens Center for Exceptional Student Education; Roger Harrell, Morgan Fitzgerald Middle; Sandy Bumgarner, Gulf Beaches Elementary; and Robert Blakley, Blanton Elementary.
John Bromell from Clearwater High's adult education center represents Workforce Development.
The outstanding volunteers will be honored April 3 in a ceremony at Ruth Eckerd Hall.
Samantha Willey, daughter of Estela and Bill Willey of Largo, earned first place in the Heart of Florida ice skating competition sponsored by the Southwest Florida Figure Skating Club in Ellenton.
Willey's performance during the ladies novice program received unanimous first place recognition from seven judges. She also won the ladies novice free skate competition.
An eighth-grader at Osceola Middle School, Willey, 13, has been skating for five years. She practices ice skating before and after school and takes ballet lessons. She plans to compete in the South Atlantic Regional Figure Staking competition in Philadelphia in October.
