TOP NEWCOMERS: Not available. OUTLOOK: The Hurricanes are strong in sprints, distance events and the field. Bass, Bryant, and Tony Lyons are the headliners, but keep an eye on Bauer and Galloway. CRYSTAL RIVERCOACH: Norris Lightsey. TOP RETURNEES: Matt Hinman, Sr., (shot, discus); Robbie Thompson, Sr., (shot, discus); George Neill, Sr., (300 hurdles); Billy Millian, Jr., (pole vault); John McKethan, So., (800). TOP NEWCOMERS: Joe Eilola, Fr., (400, 800, 1,600); Xavier Johnson, Fr., (200, 400, long jump, high jump). OUTLOOK: Millian was an all-area performer last year after winning the district title. He should be able to reach state. Hinman and Thompson have potential. Both were 2001 honorable mention all-area picks. LECANTOCOACH: Dan Epstein. TOP RETURNEES: Nate Edwards, Jr., (200, 400, 4x100); Jerimee Joiner, So., (400, 800, 4x800); Mike Perrino, Sr., (sprints); Phil Reed, Jr., (100, 200, shot, discus); Fred Simmons, Jr., (100, 4x100). TOP NEWCOMERS: Kyle Helt, Fr., (distance); Blake Rinehart, So., (4x400). OUTLOOK: The Panthers might have the county's youngest team. The roster is 75 percent freshmen and sophomores. Helt, an all-area cross country performer, should compete for district and conference titles. Reed has potential in the shot and discus. SEVEN RIVERSCOACH: Scott Lyons. TOP RETURNEES: Shawn Allen, Sr., (high jump, long jump). TOP NEWCOMERS: Richard Capra, So., (200, 400, 4x400); Damian Lyons, Jr., (400, 4x400); Chris Roth, Jr., (high jump, triple jump, 4x400). OUTLOOK: Allen, who recorded an area-best 6-4 in the state high jump, has title potential. He was second in 2000 and 2001. Lyons sat out last season but was the county's top freshman in the 400 two years ago. GIRLSCITRUS COACH: Ian Feldt. TOP RETURNEES: Katie Armstrong, Jr., (shot, discus); Emily Banks, Sr. (high jump); Kendra Bostic, Jr., (100 hurdles, 200, 4x100); Andrea Burke, Jr., (1,600, 3,200); Danialle Coates, Sr., (300 hurdles, 4x400); Melissa Davis, Sr., (100 hurdles, relays); Brittney Dorsey, So., (100, 200, 4x100, long jump); Celia Delgado, Sr., (shot, discus); Myesha Hollis, Jr., (sprints, long jump, triple jump); Emily Hooker, Jr., (400, 4x400); Chelsea Johnson, Jr., (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles); Alexia Love, So., (100, 200, 4x100, long jump, triple jump); Tara Norris, Jr., (shot, discus); Amber Presnick, Jr., (400, 4x400); Katie Steelfox, Jr., (pole vault); Brittany Vitter, Jr., (800, 4x800); Amanda Yoder, Jr., (400, 4x400). TOP NEWCOMERS: Julia Schuy, Jr., (800, 1,600, 4x800). OUTLOOK: Led by Hollis, among the area's most complete athletes, the Hurricanes will be strong from top to bottom. Coates and Steelfox were 2001 honorable mention all-area selections. Presnick has state potential. CRYSTAL RIVERCOACH: Scott Thompson. TOP RETURNEES: Mandy Smelko, Jr., (1,600, 800); Ieshia Natteal, So., (200, 400); Jerica Sawyer, Sr., (200, 400, high jump); Lisandra Vasquez, Jr., (400, 1,600, pole vault). TOP NEWCOMERS: Chasity Garcia, Fr., (200). OUTLOOK: The Pirates are short on total numbers -- especially in the distance and short sprints -- but have talent in the medium sprints that they hope will keep them competitive with Lecanto and Citrus. LECANTOCOACH: Freddie Bullock. TOP RETURNEES: Kylene Colasanti, Sr., (100 and 300 hurdles, pole vault, high jump, relays); Nicole Gasiorek, So., (400, long jump, relays); Amanda Howard, Sr., (1,600, 3,200, 4x800); Nicole Mailloux, So., (800, 1,600, relays); Kate Wheeler, Sr., (100 and 300 hurdles, high jump, triple jump, relays); Deidra Witherspoon, So., (1,600, 3,200, 4x800). TOP NEWCOMERS: Not available. OUTLOOK: The Panthers had the area's top team in 2001. They placed 12th at state. Of the seven performers who reached state, six return. Colasanti and Wheeler are among the top female athletes on the North Suncoast. Each is capable of winning a state title. SEVEN RIVERSCOACH: Scott Lyons. TOP RETURNEES: Danielle Albury, Jr., (high jump, long jump, 200, 400); Rachel Ebert, Fr., (800, 1,600); Samantha Julias, So., (100, 200); Alice Zeiss, Fr., (shot, discus). TOP NEWCOMERS: Karissa Gandee, So., (400, 800). OUTLOOK: Last season's squad had four members. The Warriors now have 10 participants. Ebert might be the best of the bunch. She reached state in the 1,600 last spring as an eighth-grader. Albury and Zeiss are worth keeping an eye on. 10 ATHLETES TO WATCHSHAWN ALLEN, SEVEN RIVERS CHRISTIAN: Has twice finished second in the state high jump. MIKE BASS, CITRUS: A conference and district champion in the 400 and 4x400. C.J. BRYANT, CITRUS: Ninth at state and a conference champ in 1,600. KYLENE COLASANTI, LECANTO: Fourth at state in 300 hurdles, eighth in high jump. MYESHA HOLLIS, CITRUS: A 100, 200, long jump and triple-jump specialist. TONY LYONS, CITRUS: Second in regional and sixth in state in 3,200. NICOLE MAILLOUX, LECANTO: Conference and district champion in 800 and 1,600. BILLY MILLIAN, CRYSTAL RIVER: District champ, fourth in regional in pole vault. KATE WHEELER, LECANTO: Reached state in four events, second in high jump.
