If you want to see a show on the ship Amara Zee, you won't need sea legs. Just curl up on shore and let the entertainment sail.

The Caravan StageBarge, a performance troupe that travels and performs on a 90-foot masted ship, has sailed back into the Tampa Bay area.

The troupe's shows are a little bit drama, a little bit dance and a little bit circus, with music and poetry thrown in. The actors and aerialists perform on the deck of the ship and amid the rigging while spectators watch from chairs or blankets on the shore.

This year's production is called Red Tide, named after the bloom of microscopic algae in the Gulf of Mexico that frequently kills fish and makes humans sneeze and wheeze.

In the Caravan production, the lead character is the Red Tidess, who wreaks havoc on the whole planet.

The troupe got its start in British Columbia more than 30 years ago, traveling through Victoria Island in a horse-drawn wagon. Construction on the ship, the Amara Zee, began in 1993, and the company set sail for a full season of performances in 1998.

The ship first played this area in 1999.

For the next few weeks, the ship is docking between performances near the University of South Florida's St. Petersburg campus. The next performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the marina near the Island Way Grill, 279 Windward Passage, Island Estates, Clearwater. Parking is available at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

The ship then moves to Port Charlotte and is expected to return to St. Petersburg for more performances in early March.

The hourlong shows are free.
