Pop music magic

We hear Mr. Neil Diamond's recent live shows feature an especially explosive rendition of America, and it's no wonder. Diamond's tune about hopeful immigrants coming to our great land always stirs up patriotic sentiments. Right now, we're liking patriotic sentiments.

Brooklyn-born Diamond, 60, has written so many pop music classics, he had to give a bunch to other artists to get them all on record. (You can thank Diamond for the Monkees' -- and Smash Mouth's -- I'm a Believer and UB40's Red, Red Wine.) The singer himself scored huge with Forever in Blue Jeans, Solitary Man, Cherry, Cherry, Kentucky Woman -- the list goes on and on.

Diamond's performance, which features his usual brand o' kitsch and Vegas-style showmanship, coupled with honest-to-goodness pop music magic, will include all the gems and a batch of new tunes from his recent Three Chord Opera disc.

Neil Diamond performs 8 p.m. Saturday at the Ice Palace, 401 Channelside Drive, Tampa. $37.50-$67.50. (813) 223-1000.
