Meal at the bar. Fancy restaurants have mixed luck selling us on those "common" or "friendship" tables where single diners don't have to eat alone. But there's a simpler alternative in place in most restaurants if you don't mind climbing onto a barstool. Restaurant bars are often idle and provide no-wait eating and quicker service for singles and couples. Watch the tube or the bartender in silence if you want. For me, the informality introduces one to a livelier class of people.
