Building begins at Raymond JamesBy Times staff writer© St. Petersburg Times published February 15, 2002 ST. PETERSBURG -- Profits are down and times are tough in the securities industry, but Raymond James Financial Inc. broke ground anyway Thursday for a $29-million office tower that will add 300,000 square feet to the company's Carillon complex. As the company's directors picked up their ceremonial shovels, bulldozers rumbled in the background, moving earth for a five-story $5.3-million parking garage that will add 1,330 spaces when finished in October. The nine-story office tower is scheduled for completion in December 2003. "Our business is cyclical," chairman Thomas James said. "If you don't start and take a little risk, you won't have the space when you need it." Raymond James broke ground for its first building on the site in 1986 and currently has 610,000 square feet of office space at Carillon. Raymond James has pledged that the expansion will create 500 new jobs, which will qualify the company for $1.5-million in state and local tax breaks. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
