Crash victim airlifted to hospital

INVERNESS -- A 20-year-old Inverness man was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital on Thursday after his westbound car crashed down an embankment off State Road 44 E and into a marshy area of the Tsala Apopka lake chain. Byron Sanders was conscious but complained of back pain when he was transported by paramedics to the waiting helicopter. The car careened off the road as Sanders rounded a curve, throwing him out the back windshield, said Patrick McDonald, a witness to the crash. Citrus County sheriff's Deputy Michael Junker said the case was still under investigation.

College bill aids military dependents

CRYSTAL RIVER -- State Sen. Richard Mitchell is cosponsoring legislation (SB 496, HB 439) that would provide college scholarships to dependent children of military personnel killed or disabled in Operation Enduring Freedom, the military's campaign against terrorism. The benefits would be similar to those included in the Bright Futures scholarships. The House of Representatives sponsor is Rep. Dwight Stansel, D-Live Oak. The Senate bill has passed through two committees; the House bill is ready for a hearing on the House floor. Mitchell, D-Jasper, represents the 4th Senate District, which includes west Citrus County.
