A closer look: One Hillsborough church
By ADAM REEDER Idlewild Baptist ChurchLOCATION: 1515 W Bearss Ave., Tampa. 264-1515 LEADERSHIP: Ken Whitten has been pastor since 1989. He holds both bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Eastern Illinois University. He and his wife, Ginny, have been married for more than 27 years. They have four children; Tara, Andrew, Kimberly and Philip. Mrs. Whitten is a homemaker. SERVICES: Worship Sunday at 8, 9:15 and 10:55 a.m., and 6:30 p.m.; Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.; Saturday 6 p.m.; Bible fellowship Sunday at 8, 9:15, and 10:55 a.m., and Saturday at 7:15 p.m. HISTORY: The church was organized officially on April 1, 1934, with a congregation of 37 charter members. They met in a simple garage on Idlewild Avenue in Tampa. They then moved to a building on the corner of Hanna and Highland in January of 1936. The second sanctuary was completed in 1951 at the same location, and in October of 1987, the membership obtained 42 acres of land at the present location. The church broke ground on the current building in January 1992, which was completed and fully functional by September 1993. RECENT SERMON TOPIC OR THEME: Exalting the Savior, evangelizing the sinner, enlisting the servant, equipping the saved, and edifying the saints through the power of God's holy word. MEMBERSHIP: 6,000. PROGRAMS: Bible studies for all ages, "Mothers of Miracles" women's ministry, men's ministry, Church league sports teams, senior group, single adults, divorce ministry, youth groups and music ministry. OUTREACH TO THE COMMUNITY: Presentations are open to the public at Christmas, Easter and the Fourth of July. The church is a supporter of Metropolitan Ministries, Crisis Pregnancy Centers and the Good Samaritan's Mission. They also support inner-city churches and several missionaries.
