CENTRAL

COACH: Benny Martinez.

2001 RECORD: 17-9.

KEY RETURNEES: Brittany Hasty, So., OF; Lindsey Herr, So., SS; Angie Paxton, Jr., OF/3B; Liz Wallace, So., 1B; Shauna Dampier, Sr., C; Lindsay Grey, Sr., SS; Jenny Clark, Sr., P.

KEY LOSSES: Riki Aulozzi, 2B/P; Tracie Ploskonka, OF; Heather Krasniewski, 3B/P.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Jen Adams, Sr., OF; Samantha Downing, So., OF; Valerie Long, Jr., 2B; Kelly Dunham, Fr., OF; Danielle Oden, Jr., DH/PH.

OUTLOOK: After losing all-conference players Aulozzi and Ploskonka and three-year starter Krasniewski from last year's conference and district championship squad, Martinez worried about finding replacements. They seem to have materialized out of thin air. Adams came over from the track team, Downing transferred from Tennessee and Long decided to come out for the first time since playing travel ball years ago. They join a strong nucleus anchored by Clark (12-6, 129 Ks, 1.42 ERA) and four-year starters Dampier (.351, 9 2Bs, 20 RBIs) and Grey (.373). If all produce as expected, Central should be capable of winning the 22 games it needs to reach its goal of 80 victories in four years.

SCHEDULE: February: 15 -- at Ridgewood, 6 p.m.; 19 -- Hernando, 6:30; 26 -- at Leesburg, 6:30; 27 -- Springstead, 7; 28 -- at Citrus, 6. March: 5 -- Leesburg, 6:30; 7 -- at Lecanto, 6; 8 -- at Land O'Lakes, 6; 13 -- Crystal River, 6; 15 -- at Ocala Forest, 5:30; 19 -- Tampa Catholic, 6; 21 -- Lecanto, 6; 22 -- at Springstead, 7. April: 1 -- at Dunnellon, 6; 2 -- at Crystal River, 6; 5 -- Dunnellon, 7; 8 -- Citrus, 6; 11 -- at Tampa Catholic, 5; 12 -- Ridgewood, 6; 16 -- Land O'Lakes, 6; 19 -- at Hernando, 6:30.

HERNANDO

COACH: Ernie Chatman.

2001 RECORD: 30-4.

KEY RETURNEES: Kimi Olmstead, Sr., SS; Ashley Rogers, So., P/C/IF; Christin Baldwin, So., P/SS; Christene Dennis, Sr., IF/C; Nicole Young, Jr., CF; Kristi Langworthy, Jr., 2B; Carolyn Gant, Jr., LF; Scottisha Scrivens, Jr., 3B; Carol Russell, Sr., OF.

KEY LOSSES: Chrissy Hartley, P; Megan Orendorf, C; Carmen Byrd, OF.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Becky Ellis, Sr., C; Tonya Stevenson, So., 1B/OF.

OUTLOOK: The post-Hartley era began with feel-good wins over Mitchell and Ridgewood, but the Leopards have a long way to go to match the exploits of their former pitcher. Hartley (22-3, 271 Ks, 0.65 ERA), the Times' 2001 All-Suncoast Player of the Year, led Hernando to the state semifinals each of the past two seasons, including a state finals appearance in 2000. Her departure easily ranks as the Leopards' biggest obstacle. But it is one the current team -- led by Olmstead, a Colgate-signee, and aided by the addition of transfers Ellis (from South Sumter) and Stevenson (from Central) -- is capable of overcoming.

SCHEDULE: February: 15 -- Land O'Lakes, 6 p.m.; 19 -- at Central, 6:30; 22 -- Springstead, 6:30; 23 -- Miami Pace, 6; 26 -- at Dunnellon, 7. March: 1 -- Santa Fe, 6:30; 2 -- at Bishop Verot, 2; 5 -- at Williston, 7; 6 -- at Hudson, 5; 8 -- at Crystal River, 6:30; 12 -- Dunnellon, 6:30; 13 -- at Lecanto, 6:30; 14 -- at Citrus, 6; 19 -- Williston, 6:30; 21 -- South Sumter, 6:30; 22 -- Crystal River, 6:30; 29-30 -- at Ridgewood Tournament, TBA. April: 2 -- at Springstead, 6; 5 -- at Land O'Lakes, 6; 8 -- Hudson, 6; 10 -- at Pasco, 7; 12 -- Citrus, 6:30; 16 -- Lecanto, 6:30; 18 -- Mitchell, 6:30; 19 -- Central, 6:30; 23-26 -- District tournament at Citrus, TBA.

SPRINGSTEAD

COACH: Carmine Rufa.

2001 RECORD: 7-15.

KEY RETURNEES: Emily Eicholtz, Jr., P; Caitlin DeCristofaro, Jr., C; Diana Eckert, Jr., SS; Vicki Albert, Sr., 2B; Jessie Larocco, Jr., OF; Megan Allen, So., OF; Vanessa Zeigler, So., 3B; Sarah Davidson, Jr., 1B.

KEY LOSSES: Katie Mottola, OF; Janet Levic, 1B.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Stephanie Discepolo, Fr., 1B; Ashley Libertore, Fr., OF; Nicole Bradshaw, Fr., OF; Heather Benson, Fr., OF.

OUTLOOK: Co-captains Eicholtz, DeCristofaro, Eckert and Albert are the backbone of an improving squad that increased its win total each of the past three seasons. With nine players coming off summer ball and a lineup solid up the middle, the Eagles appear capable of continuing that trend. Mottola took her bunting/slap-hitting ability to Pasco-Hernando Community College, but Rufa groomed a successor in Allen. Eicholtz, who pitched in all but one game last season, will keep Springstead in games. It remains to be seen whether the Eagles can get key hits with runners on base.

SCHEDULE: February: 9 -- at Dunedin, TBA; 11 -- at Dunnellon, 6 p.m.; 15 -- Gulf, 7:30; 19 -- at Crystal River, 6:30; 20 -- Hudson, 6; 22 -- at Hernando, 6:30; 27 -- Central, 6. March: 1 -- at Ridgewood, 7; 5 -- Lecanto, 6:30; 7 -- at Hudson, 5; 8 -- Leesburg, 7; 12 -- at Leesburg, 7; 13 -- Land O'Lakes, 6; 15 -- Dunnellon, 7; 18 -- South Sumter, 7; 20 -- at Lecanto, 6:30; 22 -- at Central, 7. April: 2 -- Hernando, 6; 3 -- Ridgewood, 7; 5 -- at Citrus, 6; 10 -- Crystal River, 6; 12 -- at Land O'Lakes, 6; 16 -- at Gulf, 6; 17 -- Citrus, 6; 19 -- at South Sumter, 6; 23-25 -- District tournament at Lecanto, 5.
