ST. PETERSBURG -- All week long, St. Petersburg Catholic dreamed about ending the school's district-title drought.

ST. PETERSBURG -- All week long, St. Petersburg Catholic dreamed about ending the school's district-title drought.

That dream became reality Saturday night against Sarasota Cardinal Mooney. The Barons made 12 3-pointers on their way to a 73-48 win and their first district title since 1975.

The Cougars started the game with a 7-0 run, capped off by Alex Moore's 3-pointer. But the Barons responded with a 16-9 spurt to tie it up at the end of the first quarter.

The Barons grabbed the lead for good in the second quarter thanks to Dave Lopez, who scored 13 of his game-high 28 points in the quarter. Lopez also made three of his six 3-pointers in the quarter. Chad Radosevich added two from beyond the arc.

The Cougars, who trailed by 13 at the end of the third, were done in by poor shooting in the fourth quarter, scoring six points and going 1 for 6 from the free-throw line.

"I'm proud of these guys staying together," said Barons coach Mike Moran. "We started 3-4, and it took a lot of guts and hard work. I'm real proud of them."
