Ask the Dietitian: What are best protein foods?
By STEPHANIE TOBER Question: Is fish the new best source of protein now? If not, what food is? Pinellas Park High student Answer: There is no new best source of protein that I know of. Protein is found in fish, beef, lamb, chicken, eggs, beans, soy products, dairy products, some vegetables and grains. Fish has been in the news for a number of reasons. The American Heart Association recommends eating at least two servings of fish per week for a healthy heart. Fish contains omega 3 fatty acids. This type of fat reduces the risk for blood clots. Fish is low in calories and can be a meal in minutes. The Canadian Department of Fisheries has developed a reliable method for estimating how long to cook fish. It recommends cooking fish 10 minutes per inch of thickness if the fish is fresh and 20 minutes for every inch if it has been frozen. The FDA has issued a warning regarding women who are pregnant or of childbearing age about eating shark, swordfish, tilefish and king mackerel because of high mercury content. - Stephanie Tober welcomes your questions and will respond to those of general interest in future columns.
