Verizon to move regional office to TampaBy J. NEALY-BROWN, Times Staff Writer© St. Petersburg Times published February 21, 2002 TAMPA -- Verizon is moving its regional headquarters to Tampa from Durham, N.C. as part of the reorganization after the telephone company sold its Alabama and Kentucky businesses. John A. Ferrell, who has been president of Florida operations, will be president for Verizon's South region that includes North Carolina and South Carolina. "This is mostly an administrative move," said Bob Elek, a spokesman for Verizon. The number of jobs will not be significantly affected in North Carolina or Tampa, he said. All of the changes should be in place by the middle of the year. Ferrell, 51, joined GTE, Verizon's predecessor in Florida, in 1998 as state president of operations. He replaced Peter Daks, who left to work on the team planning the merger of GTE Corp. and Bell Atlantic Corp. That merger produced Verizon. Ferrell previously had been director of GTE Network Services' Remote Operations Support, a business unit in Dallas that gave technical support to GTE's regional telephone companies. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
