Short reign likely for 'Queen of the Damned'
The late pop singer Aaliyah still had some dubbing work to do on Queen of the Damned when she died in a Bahamas plane crash last August. After her brother's assistance in imitating her voice and a suitable mourning period, Warner Bros. is ready to share her last screen appearance with fans. Queen of the Damned is based on Anne Rice's novel, the third of the Lestat series that began with Interview with the Vampire. Tom Cruise passed on the opportunity to recreate that role for this film. Someone named Stuart Townsend takes up the cape as Lestat becomes a rock star whose music awakens a bloodsucking icon (Aaliyah). This one looks cheesier than Neil Jordan's atmospheric 1994 version of Rice's first Lestat novel. Aaliyah's fans and horror buffs should add up to solid opening numbers, then expect a fast slide to video shelves. See Friday's page 2B for a review.
