Back woods walk

Take a walk through a winding path of the endangered gopher tortoise's habitats and native plants as the Museum of Science and Industry hosts its sixth annual "Back Woods Walk."

The 1-mile nature trail is multiaccessible and can accommodate wheelchairs. The walk begins at 8 a.m. Tuesday and walkers will receive a continental breakfast, T-shirt and voucher to the IMAX dome theatre.

The film Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure will be showing during the "Young at Heart Senior Fun Fest" at 12:15 and 3 p.m. at the IMAX dome. This film tells the true story of polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton's ill-fated British imperial trans-Antarctic expedition.

Other activities include live music by the Treble Clefs, '50s and '60s music, dancing, antique car exhibit, bingo, free health screenings, Citrus Bloodmobile, flu shots, pneumonia shots, senior painting display, computers and coffee, exhibits with free samples and a financial planning workshop.

The event is free for senior IMAX members and $7 for nonmembers. For information, call 987-6300.

Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys

Steve Riley's music encompasses the Louisiana sound, from Cajun waltzes to Clifton Chenier-style Zydeco and Slim Harpo-influenced blues. This accordion player started at age 7 and joined Dewey Balfa's band at 15. He released eight CDs before he was 30.

Riley formed his new band in 1988, adding the three-row accordion, common to Zydeco, along with the saxophone. The performance is at 8 tonight at Skipper's Smokehouse, 910 Skipper Road. Tickets are $10 in advance through Ticketmaster or $13 at the door. For information, call 971-0666.

'Style Kitten' launches guv'na bid with sale

A sidewalk sale of baked goods, face painting, "bedazzled" clothing and other items will mark an early start to this year's guv'na competition in Lutz. The sale, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, will benefit the candidacy of "Style Kitten" Brett Montegny. It will be held at Classy Consignments, the store she owns in Sunset Plaza. For information, call 949-4076. Guv'na candidates compete to raise funds for community causes. The winner is named each July 4.
