The clean squadBy Times staff© St. Petersburg Times published February 24, 2002 UNIVERSITY NORTH -- Jefferson High School students took to the streets last Saturday to clean up what litterbugs leave behind. Thirty students, along with volunteers from the University of South Florida and the North Tampa Cadet Squadron, collected nearly 2 tons of garbage -- including tires, furniture and appliances -- from 22nd Street to 15th Street, between Bearss and Fletcher avenues. After the two-hour cleanup, volunteers were treated to a barbecue lunch, courtesy of the Publix supermarket at Van Dyke Road and N Dale Mabry Highway. The event was sponsored by Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful, a nonprofit group that promotes environmental awareness. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
