CCC, PHU celebrate state titles

Two out of three wasn't bad for Pinellas County schools in Saturday's state soccer championships. Clearwater Central Catholic won the Class A boys title convincingly, 3-0 over Plantation Bishop Verot at the Ed Radice Sports Complex. Joey Ijjas scored two goals as the Marauders won their ninth championship.

Palm Harbor University won the Class 3A boys title 2-1 against Hollywood Hills at Pepin/Rood Stadium. The Hurricanes won their first championship behind goals by Mike Samson and James Erigo, and a stingy defense that held off a late Hollywood Hills rally.

Clearwater Central Catholic's girls team also was seeking a title, but lost 2-1 to Plantation American Heritage in the Class A final. It would have been the Marauders' first championship since 1999.
