Movie: John Q
Rating: PG-13
Summary: John Q. Archibald (Denzel Washington) is a middle-aged father of a young boy, Mike (Daniel E. Smith). One day while playing in a baseball game, Mike collapses on the field, and is rushed to the emergency room. It is soon discovered that Mike needs a heart transplant, which will cost more than $250,000. Unknown to John Q, changes were made to his health insurance policy so that it no longer covered surgery of that magnitude. He made some honest attempts to raise money for the required $75,000 down payment, but he was able to raise only $22,000. Time is running out for his son, so in a state of utter desperation, John Q. seizes the hospital emergency room until provisions are made for Mike's surgery.
My View: This was a very good film. I don't think I've ever seen a Denzel Washington movie that I didn't enjoy, and this one surely didn't disappoint. To me, the measure of a good movie is how much you become engrossed in what you are watching. This movie captured me, because it had a premise that I haven't seen before. There were several edge-of-your-seat moments, and the plot kept flowing throughout, keeping the audience intrigued. I was impressed by nearly everything in this film.
Favorite Part: The acting in this film was top notch!
Least Favorite Part: In my opinion, John Q was solid all the way through.
Recommended: There are a few graphic, bloody scenes involving the surgery, and there is also strong language; the PG-13 rating is appropriate. Putting that aside, this is a truly impressive film, possibly worthy of an Oscar.
Grade: A+
