Tips on Alzheimer's care

Get the latest information and practical tips on caring for individuals with Alzheimer's through "Alzheimer's Disease: What Caregivers Need to Know," 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday at the Sun City Community Hall, 1910 S Pebble Beach Blvd., Sun City Center. Rally around for fun day

Poetry and photo contest

The National Council on Aging and the American Society on Aging are holding the "Crossing the Great Divide" poetry and photography contest. Participants may submit up to three unpublished works in either medium. Poems must be less than 100 lines, and photos must be no larger than 24 inches, mounted on stiff mat board and identified with title of photo, contestant's name, address and telephone number. All works must be based on the "Crossing the Great Divide" theme. Submit works to: Photography/Poetry Contest, c/o It's Never 2 Late, 3569 S Pennsylvania St., Englewood, CO 80110. All entries must be postmarked by March 15.

Series boosts good health

Staying healthy is made simpler with the help of the free community series USF Mini-Med School 2002, 7-9 p.m. March 4 and 11 at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, 1010 N W.C. MacInnes Place, Tampa. Topics include exercise, body scans, epilepsy, heart attacks and how to get the most out of a doctor's visit. Call (813) 974-3300.

Study seeks participants

The University of South Florida and Dr. Michael Mullan are looking for 700 adults ages 70 or older to participate in an Alzheimer's prevention trial. This four-year study will evaluate whether taking two nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, commonly prescribed to prevent the pain and inflammation of arthritis, will protect against memory loss in people at high risk for Alzheimer's disease. To qualify, individuals must have a biological parent, brother or sister diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or severe dementia. For more information, call (813) 974-3100.
