Say itBy Times staff writer© St. Petersburg Times published February 28, 2002 Hernando Elementary School third grade students, visited recently by U.S. Rep. Karen Thurman, were asked: "What did you learn from Mrs. Thurman today?" MATTHEW HOOKS, 9 "I learned about Abraham Lincoln, how he was little and he grew up in a log cabin, and I learned that George Washington cut down a cherry tree when he was little, and he was brave and told the truth." CHRISTINA COATES, 8 "The one that read to us works with the president, and she said he has a running track." BRITTANY DALBOW, 9 "I learned that you should tell the truth like George Washington did and that he has a huge swimming pool and that he hides the swimming pool in the conference room and that he goes on all kinds of trips on the Air Force One jet plane and that he goes all over the world to other countries." (Reporter's note: A swimming pool was built in the West Wing in 1933 for President Franklin D. Roosevelt, but was filled in 1969 during President Nixon's administration for a press room. An outdoor pool was built in 1975 during President Ford's administration. -- source: infoplease.com) TIMOTHY CARTER, 9 "I learned that Abraham Lincoln lived in a cabin, and he wasn't rich at that time, but he did become president and he got shot. And George Washington beat the British that were the Redcoats." © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
