CHOCACHATTI ELEMENTARY: The school will hold an admissions lottery orientation session today at 7 p.m. Applications are available in the office between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. The lottery will be held live on HITV (Channel 14) on March 6 at 6 p.m.

BROOKSVILLE ELEMENTARY: The school will hold its annual Dr. Seuss Read Across America celebration Friday throughout the day. Local community members including Hernando County superintendent Wendy Tellone, plus staffers of the Brooksville Police Department, Brooksville Fire Department, the Hernando Sheriff's Office, Brooksville Public Library and others will participate in reading Dr. Seuss books in classrooms throughout the day.

EASTSIDE ELEMENTARY: The school will hold a kindergarten roundup March 7 from 6-7:30 p.m. and March 14 from 9:15-10:15 a.m. and March 18 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. For more information, call 797-7045, ext. 278.

SPRING HILL ELEMENTARY: The school will hold a kindergarten registration meeting March 8 from noon-3 p.m. and from 5-7 p.m. in the cafeteria. Parents may register their kindergarten-eligible children and tour the campus during those hours. For more information, call 797-7030.

HERNANDO CHRISTIAN ACADEMY: The school will hold its annual support dinner March 8 at Silverthorn Country Club. The guest speaker will be Secretary of Education Charlie Crist. Ticket purchase and RSVP is required by today to attend. For information, call Jessica Lovett at 796-0616, ext. 137.

ACTIVE PARENTING WORKSHOPS: The Exceptional Student Education program is sponsoring a series of parent workshops dealing with child behavior at locations throughout the county during the school year. The six-week sessions are free to everyone; however, those attending must register in advance due to seating limitations. For information, call Doris Gero at 797-7022.

HONOR STUDENT BANQUET AHEAD: The 28th annual Greater Hernando Chamber of Commerce Honor Student Banquet will be held April 17 at 6 p.m. at the new Palace Grand in Spring Hill on U.S. 19. The banquet recognizes the efforts of the top 5 percent of Hernando County's graduating seniors. The chamber will award $2,000 in scholarships with funds generated from extra revenues and in partnership with the Hernando County Education Foundation. For information, call 796-0697, ext. 15.

NEWSMAKERS:

Central High seniors Maigan Flateau and Cynthia Zurawsky were recently named as finalists for the National Merit Scholarship program. Both qualified for the honor by meeting specific high academic standards at their school.

The Springstead High School Thespian Troupe on Feb 2 and Feb. 3 competed at districts, earning four excellent ratings and six superior ratings, including three critic's choice. Gerald Ziccardy and Nicole Kolbasiuk received superior ratings for duet acting, and Danielle Wilcox and Scott Kirkman received superior ratings for solo musical(s). Belinda Owen got critic's choice for student directing (Noises Off!), Jeni Budnik received critic's choice for costume design (Medea), and Amy Kolbasiuk and Victoria Primosch got critic's choice for duet acting (Lost in Yonkers). Eighteen people from Springstead will attend the upcoming state competition. The group needs sponsors to raise $1,000 for the trip.
