Car and art lovers, zoom to Dunedin

Cars, art and kids all come together Saturday at the Dunedin Fine Art Center.

The innovative exhibit, "Wheels: Artists and Automobiles," which looks at cars as art, was supposed to close Sunday, but has been extended to May 17 because of its popularity. So the center incorporated the Wheels exhibit into its annual Kids Art Festival.

Children's art activities will be scattered throughout Highlander Park, adjacent to the center, along with an invitational and juried show of about 70 vehicles, including classic and vintage cars, trucks and motorcycles, hot rods and racing cars.

Also on display: a Batmobile that was owned by a Tarpon Springs collector. It was used for promotion of Batman Forever.

The "Wheels" show was one of the must-see exhibits in the Tampa Bay area during the past year. It features some stunning vehicles, including Y2K Bug, a 1974 Volkswagen Beetle encrusted with computer parts, CDs and LED lights, by Safety Harbor artists Todd Ramquist and Kiaralinda. The car won a first-place award at the International Art Car Parade in Houston in 1999.

The underlying theme of the show is the impact that vehicles have had on American culture. The message is conveyed through both high and low art, through works that are sometimes functional and often fun. It makes you think about the basic components of art -- balance, shape and color -- that make up good design.

The free Kids Art Festival and the car show are from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. "Wheels: Artists and Automobiles" concludes at the center Sunday. A related automobile exhibit at the adjacent David L. Mason Children's Art Museum continues through September.

The center, the children's art museum and the park are all at 1143 Michigan Blvd., Dunedin. Admission to the art center, the car show, the children's art museum and the festival are all free Saturday. Regular admission to the children's museum is $4. For more information, call (727) 298-3322.
