PROTECTIVE PACKAGING: Easier to deal with than foam peanuts or bubble wrap, 3M's Inflata-Pak gives consumers a new way to protect fragile gifts sent by mail. It's a heavy-duty plastic pouch that, when inflated, creates a sealed cushion of air for whatever is placed inside. It can be used for safely storing fragile items at home, because it will stay inflated for up to two years. The Inflata-Pak comes in three sizes, ranging from about $3 to $5.65 per bag. It's sold at office supply, mass merchandise, drugstores and grocery stores.

TALKING PORTMEIRION: Anwyl Cooper-Willis, daughter of the founder of Portmeirion Potteries, will be at Burdines in WestShore Plaza at noon Friday to sign purchases and talk about the British ceramic manufacturer's designs. "Botanic Garden" is its best-seller, in more than 200 items and having more than 30 flower motifs.
