Royal revels at the Swamp Festival

Royal revels at the Swamp Festival

The Weeki Wachee Swamp Festival celebrates the food and fun of old-time Florida.

The two-day event boasts alligator meat, swamp cabbage, fried green tomatoes, wildlife exhibits, clogging, fiddling and all manner of revelry, plus arts and crafts and kids' activities.

The costume contests at 11:30 a.m. Saturday crown a new Swamp King, Swamp Queen, Swamp Prince, Swamp Princess and Swamp Monster. Jackie Malowney of Tampa, right, was last year's queen.

The free festival, put on each year by three area civic groups, is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Weeki Wachee Christian Camp, Shoal Line Boulevard (State Road 597), 1/2 mile south of Cortez Boulevard in Hernando County. For information, call (352) 596-4743.
