If you think you hear bells ringing when you wheel past the Tampa Convention Center on Brorein Street or zip over the Brorein Street Bridge, you may be right.
Both the street and the bridge are named in honor of Carl Brorein Sr., president of the Peninsular Telephone Co. The phone company was founded by Brorein's father, William Carl Brorein (1895-1973), was also the administrator of the Crosstown Expressway Authority.
The Peninsular Telephone Co. has a history of its own. It became GTE; now it's Verizon. Confused? Don't call on Brorein. All the changes were made after he left. Try the operator for assistance.
