Team Bongiorno rolls to win

Nobody could match the numbers recorded by Team Bongiorno.

It won the title and $1,000 in the St. Petersburg Association City Tournament, which ended Sunday at Seminole Lanes.

Bongiorno was led by Chris Steele (806 series), Nick Bongiorno (749), Mike Bongiorno (690), Phil Atkinson Jr. (661) and Ronnie Atkinson (646). Their 3,686 total, including a 1,270 second game, was 168 pins higher than the mark posted by last year's winning squad, J. Scanga.

The Scrubs -- Gary and Brian Halstrom, Rick Ickes, Jeff Cole and Joe Bereczki -- finished second, 3,559. Mister B's Pro Shop was third, 3,499.

Richard Correa and Tim Dunbar (1,526) edged Bret Frisse and Joe Panebianco for the doubles crown. Ronnie Potts and Mike Foss (1,490) were third.

Mike Crosby (799 series) won singles. Kerry Harris (792) and Brian Rolston (790) were second and third, respectively.

Association Hall of Famer Darryl Dempsey captured the all-events championship with a 2,207, including a 300 game. Bobby Salerno finished second, 2,189 with a 299 game; and Keith Charette (2,149) was third.

Other high scores included 300 games by Keith Glasgow, Phil Knapp, Dempsey and Crosby; a 299 by Nick Bongiorno and Salerno; and a 297 by Dunbar.

NAMELESS WINNER: One squad in the Suncoast Association's annual city tournament preferred to remain nameless, but it won the title of the event that ended Sunday at Pasco's Lane-Glo Bowl.

The nameless New Port Richey team rolled a 3,042 to beat Largo's Cheep White Trash (2,958) and the first-week leader, the Strikers of New Port Richey (2,946).

The members of the winning squad were Mark Every (713), Kim Feagley (557), Carlos Rosa Jr. (677) and Rudy Feagley (732).

New Port Richey's Robert Cullum won the singles with an 867 first-weekend series that stood the charge by New Port Richey's Hershell Pinegar (852) and Seminole's Brad Stenz (820).

The doubles title went to New Port Richey's Robert Koch and Neil Dolan (1,518). Don Swogger and Cullum finished second, and Vanessa Clesla and James Hurd III were third. Both duos are from New Port Richey.

Dunedin's James Penrod (2,346) won the all-events crown. Holiday's Joe LaVoy (2,344) was second.

YABA: Travis Reichert of Seminole Lanes and Joesph Fitzgerald of AMF Kenneth City Lanes were double winners in the Greater Pinellas Championships at Twedt's and Ten Pin lanes.

Reichert (820 series) won the D Division singles crown and teamed with James Croy to capture the doubles (1,450 pinfall).

Fitzgerald (780 series) was the E Division singles champ and won doubles with Daniel Fitzgerald (1,484).

Other singles champions were Sean Crosby (708), David Broughton (812) and Joe Scroppo (782). Team winners included TCS No. 2, TCS No. 5, Spare Shooters, The Unknowns, Pin Action.com and Kenneth City Strikers.

PREP QUALIFIERS: Palm Harbor's Cassie Carpenter, New Port Richey's Stephen Rodriguez and Tampa's T. Reeves qualified at Countryside Lanes for the USA Junior Gold National Championships, scheduled for July in Winter Haven.

DAUGHERTY WINS: Top-seeded Tom Daugherty defeated Bob Smolka 267-211 in the Florida Bowling Club event at Sunshine Bowl. Smolka stopped Rick Ickes 255-215 to reach the final, and Rick Peak lost to Ickes to finish fourth.

KIDS SCORE: Alex and Allen Whetstone (793) head the youthadult scholarship scotch doubles after the first round at Liberty Lanes. Elise Miller and Ron Mowbray (754) lead the Division 2 competition.

CORRECTION: The Clearwater Women's Association honors its yearly high-average player with an award.

AROUND THE LANES: Hector Aponte fired a 300-750 at Countryside Lanes. ... Robert Gonnelly rolled a 300 game at Seminole Lanes, and Brian Halstrom recorded a 290-822. ... Ty Hendricks nailed a 300 at Liberty Lanes. Phil Peters, Mike Wetherall, Ernie Rodriguez and Cliff Barnes won the midnight team tournament. ... Arnie Adams posted a 300-673 at AMF Kenneth City Lanes, and Phil James had a 300-758. ... The Clearwater Women's Association annual city tournament opens this weekend and ends March 10 at Rainbow Lanes.
