Police chief job draws nine more applicants
By BRADY DENNIS, Times Staff Writer ZEPHYRHILLS -- Nine more men, from California to Kansas to Clearwater, have applied to take charge of the Zephyrhills Police Department when Chief Robert Howell steps down in October. This pushes the number of applicants to 13. The first four applications came from Florida residents. But the latest batch shows that plenty of people from across the country are willing to come to the Sunshine State. The newest applicants are: Richard Prentice, a captain with the Hawthorne Police Department in Hawthorne, Calif. According to his resume, Prentice graduated in 1979 from Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif. He also earned a master's degree in public administration from the University of Southern California in 1991. William Sammon, a lieutenant with the New York City Police Department. According to his resume, Sammon graduated with a business management degree from St. Francis College in 1977. Cameron D. Arthur, chief of the Galena Police Department in Galena, Kan. According to his resume, Arthur holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Bellevue University and a master's degree from Troy State University. Howard H. Morris, chief of the LaVergne Police Department in LaVergne, Tenn. According to his resume, Morris holds a criminal justice degree from Middle Tennessee State University and served with the Navy in Vietnam. Jerry W. Freeman, an officer with the Hialeah Police Department near Miami. According to his resume, Freeman holds a criminal justice degree from Florida International University and a master's degree in management from St. Thomas University. Raymond R. McGill, a captain in the Mahwah Police Department in New Jersey. According to his resume, McGill holds a doctorate in criminal justice from Rutgers University in New Jersey. Hayes Alan Tubbs, a sergeant in the Miami-Dade Police Department. According to his resume, Tubbs has earned associate degrees in criminology and police science from Miami-Dade Community College. Wayne R. Meissner, a captain in the Clearwater Police Department. According to his resume, Meissner holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Saint Leo University. George H. Hartwig, a former police officer and currently an assistant district attorney in Perry, Ga. According to his resume, Hartwig worked at the Deerfield Beach Police Department before earning his bachelor's degree in criminal justice from the University of Florida in 1988 and a law degree from Mercer University in 1991. The Zephyrhills Police Department has a $2.5-million budget and employs 29 officers. The chief's job will pay $45,283 to $65,660, depending on experience.
