Brandon Backe, RHP, No. 72

WHY HE'S HERE: Converted infielder went 4-1 with 10 saves, 3.15 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 711/3 relief innings for Bakersfield, Charleston and Orlando.

Jon Switzer, LHP, No. 57

WHY HE'S HERE: Second-round pick in 2001 draft went 2-0, 0.63 in five games for Class A Hudson Valley, gets to see what big-league camp is like.

Enger Veras, RHP, No. 71

WHY HE'S HERE: The 20-year-old right-hander was added to 40-man roster after going 9-8 with a 4.53 ERA and team-high 153 innings for Class A Bakersfield.

Jorge Cantu, SS, No. 13

WHY HE'S HERE: Team's top shortstop prospect was a Double-A Southern League All-Star at 19, hitting .256 with four homers and 45 RBIs.

Jason Smith, INF, No. 29

WHY HE'S HERE: Acquired from Cubs in Fred McGriff deal, has a chance for utility role now, shortstop job later.

Ramon Soler, 2B, No. 62

WHY HE'S HERE: Speedy 20-year-old defensive whiz was added to 40-man roster after solid season at Bakersfield; moved from shortstop due to shoulder injury.

Rocco Baldelli, OF, No. 56

WHY HE'S HERE: First-round pick in 2000 draft with blossoming offensive and defensive skills gets to see what big-league camp is about.

Jason Conti, OF, No. 4

WHY HE'S HERE: Acquired from D'backs in Albie Lopez deal, strong defensive player has a chance for backup outfield job.
