Phillies at a glance

2001 RECORD: 86-76, second in NL East.

2001 REVIEW: The Phillies surprised for first-year manager Larry Bowa, winning 21 more games than in 2000 for their second winning season since 1986. With three rookies in the five-man rotation down the stretch, Philadelphia couldn't hold off Atlanta, which won the division by two games and kept the Phillies out of the postseason.

MANAGER: Larry Bowa (second season, 86-76; 167-203 overall)

WHO'S NEW: RHP Terry Adams, LHP Pete Schourek, OF Ricky Ledee, OF John Mabry.

WHO'S GONE: LHP Omar Daal, OF Brian Hunter, RHP Dennis Cook, RHP Chris Brock.

FLASHY PHENOMS: Outfielder Marlon Byrd was MVP of the Class AA Eastern League, hitting .316 with 28 home runs, 89 RBIs and 32 steals. His five-tool potential will have centerfielder Doug Glanville looking over his shoulder all season. Starters Brandon Duckworth and Dave Coggin will be back in the rotation after proving themselves as rookies last year.

SURE THINGS: Outfielder Bobby Abreu is locked up with a five-year, $64-million deal, and the team remains hopeful it can keep third baseman Scott Rolen, who turned down a 10-year, $140-million offer. There's a strong core of young hitters, with shortstop Jimmy Rollins, outfielder Pat Burrell and first baseman Travis Lee. Catcher Mike Lieberthal returns after missing most of 2001 after major knee surgery.

QUESTION MARKS: How will Rolen's uncertain future affect the team? Can Robert Person and Randy Wolf lead a young staff and follow strong second-half success from last year? Can Jose Mesa, who turns 36 in May, turn in another dependable season as closer? Can the Phils keep pace into the summer with the upgrading Mets and perennially tough Braves?
