TAMPA -- The South Florida softball team continues to struggle.
On Feb. 22, it lost twice to 10th-ranked Michigan 8-0 and 6-2. The Bulls are 6-12-1 on the season.
There were few positives in the losses.
Senior Ginny Georgantas became the third player to record 200 career hits after her single in the first game. Shelly Riker stole four bases, giving her a season total of seven. Holly Groves had four hits, going 4-for-5.
After starting the season ranked 25th, the Bulls have since dropped out of the poll. Last season, USF posted wins against five ranked opponents and earned their fourth NCAA regional appearance. In the regional tournament, the Bulls faced the Wolverines and lost twice. USF is still waiting for its first win against a ranked opponent this season, having lost to No. 1 Arizona and No. 14 Notre Dame. USF opens Conference USA play Saturday at home with a three-game series against Houston.
WOMEN'S TRACK: Freshman Bente General won the 800 meters at the Conference USA Indoor Track Championships in Bloomington, Ind., on Feb. 22 with a record time of 2:09.66, earning her C-USA Freshman of the Year honors.
USF placed second to Houston, ending a two-year string as conference champion. Houston won with 107 points. USF had 89.5.
Other top performances included a second-place finish for Chandra Brewer in the shot put with a throw of 48 feet, 11/4 inches. Amber Delpino placed third in the 400 in 56.82, and Tara Quinn (9:42.48) and Kristy Fuller (9:48.01) were third and fourth in the 3,000. Quinn had already won the 5,000 in a C-USA record time of 16:33.24. Dayana Octavien won the weight throw with a toss of 61-2. MEN'S TENNIS: The Bulls lost to Tulane 5-2 in the first day of the Conference USA Men's Tennis Shootout on Friday at TCU's Friedman Tennis Center.
The Bulls, ranked 30th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, won the doubles point but the Green Wave, ranked 40th, came back and won five out of six singles matches. The lone Bull to pick up a singles win was Nadim Naser at No. 6. He defeated Alexander Dion 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
