Panel wants focus on math, science

LARGO -- Thurgood Marshall Middle School should offer programs that focus on science, math and technology, a school district committee voted this week.

The District Monitoring and Advisory Committee's recommendation about Thurgood Marshall Middle and two new elementary schools soon will be considered by the School Board.

Some parents want Thurgood Marshall to be a fundamental middle school.

DMAC also recommends that Sanderlin Elementary School offer International Baccalaureate courses with art and foreign language, while the 11th Avenue S elementary school should focus on math, science and technology.

The three new schools, all south of Central Avenue in St. Petersburg, are being built as part of a court settlement with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.

The schools will be open in fall 2003 when the district starts a new school choice program.

Synagogue, church marked by graffiti

ST. PETERSBURG -- Police are investigating graffiti at Congregation B'Nai Israel and St. Jude's Catholic Church.

Employees found red, spray-painted messages when they arrived for work Friday morning. Police believe the incidents are related because the handwriting is similar.

The messages were on the outside of the buildings at Congregation B'Nai Israel, 300 58th St. N, and St. Jude's, 5815 15th Ave. N.

The incidents were referred to the Police Department's intelligence and gang units.
