ST. PETERSBURG -- Walgreens at 875 Dr. M.L. King (Ninth) St. N is closing its liquor store to allow the drugstore to expand into the adjacent space.
"We're doing that in a lot of stores in the country. We've been de-emphasizing liquor in our stores," said Carol Hively, spokeswoman for Walgreen Co. in Deerfield, Ill. The reason is that managing and running a liquor store is too costly for the profit it brings in some areas, she said.
Although Walgreen Co. is not getting out of liquor sales completely, only 200 to 300 of its 3,678 stores have liquor sections.
Walgreens drugstores now are emphasizing their photo finishing, nutritional supplements and expanded snack sections, Hively said. Stores also carry items particular to their locations. For Florida, that means tourist items such as suntan lotions.
