Two killed in car-tractor crash
By BRADY DENNIS, Times Staff Writer SAN ANTONIO -- A Dade City taxicab plowed into the back of a John Deere tractor Wednesday morning, authorities said, killing the 48-year-old woman driving the cab and a farm worker who was in a small trailer being pulled by the tractor. The wreck happened about 9:40 a.m. on St. Joe Road, a two-lane strip of pavement that winds through orange groves and large oak trees west of Dade City. Florida Highway Patrol reports said that Marilyn A. Brown of 14812 Porter St. in Dade City was driving east in the yellow 1999 Chevrolet taxi. A 1987 John Deere tractor driven by Antonio Virgen, 64, of Dade City was ahead of her, ambling slowly in the same lane. Riding in a small trailer attached to the tractor were Dade City residents Emigdo Perez-Convarruvias of 15150 21st St. and Milton Ramirez-Lopez of 36522 County Road 52. FHP officials did not give the men's ages. Brown, for reasons troopers did not list on the report, struck the tractor from behind. Brown, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the taxi and died at the scene. Perez-Convarruvias was thrown from the trailer and also died at the scene. Ramirez-Lopez was taken by helicopter to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, where he remained Wednesday in fair condition, a hospital spokeswoman said. FHP officials made no mention of the condition of the tractor's driver. At the crash site, authorities sealed off the scene with yellow police tape. The road stayed blocked in both directions for more than four hours while investigators worked. Troopers declined to speak to reporters at the scene but stated in a news release that they did not suspect alcohol played any part in the accident. They also said charges in the case are pending. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
