CITRUS SPRINGS -- He's not exactly sure what he's in for, but Christopher Fronczak is going to Australia this summer. He was selected to be part of the People to People Student Ambassador Program.

The 13-year-old seventh-grader from Citrus Springs Middle School explained in a letter to prospective sponsors that the program was initiated in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in an effort to build peace in the world through person to person contact. "He believed," Chris said, "that if people from different cultures could come together in peace and friendship, so eventually would countries."

Chris doesn't know how he was selected, but he said he thought it was because of how well he did on the Iowa test. He said he will be able to earn high school and college credit for his participation in the three-week program.

He's excited about going and says he wants to see everything. "I want to go to Sydney," he said. "It sounds like a really fascinating place."

Student in nation's capital participating in law forum

INVERNESS -- Citrus High senior Brandie White is in Washington, D.C., this week until Sunday participating in the National Youth Leadership Forum on Law.

Criteria for selection included academic achievement and an interest in law and justice. Activities in the nation's capital for the 300 plus high school students Brandie is with from across the nation include visits to law firms, area courthouses and the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.

They will also visit the University of Maryland School of Law, Washington College of Law at American University, Howard School of Law and George Washington School of Law.

Brandie says she hopes she will gain "a lot of experience. We actually get to work with some of the most professional lawyers in the United States."

They will also participate in a mock trial based on a U.S. Supreme Court case," she said.

Brandie plans to attend the University of North Florida in Jacksonville and is considering a career in criminal law or business.

Lecanto High junior picked to be a Governor's All Star

LECANTO -- Cortney Stewart is headed to Tallahassee. She was recently recognized at a School Board meeting for being selected as the representative from Citrus County to spend the day in the state capital, including lunch with Gov. Jeb Bush.

Cortney, 16, is a junior at Lecanto High School. She thinks she was selected to be a Governor's All Star became of her honors class load and community service. She said she knows it was a close selection.

On March 18 she will tour the capital and participate in a round-table discussion with the All Stars from other Florida counties. She is looking forward to meeting the governor.

"I'm excited to meet him," she said, "because I'm a devout Republican." She says she has always been a fan of the Bush family.

Cortney is thinking about going to Florida State University. She says she has always wanted to teach, perhaps middle school.

After teaching for a while, though, she'd like to go to George Washington University to major in political science. "I want to go into educational politics," she said.

Cortney is the daughter of Stan and Kathie Stewart.
