COUPLE CHARGED: Authorities accused an Inverness couple of swiping more than $450,000 from an elderly woman and her husband. The elderly woman sought medical equipment at Florida Oxygen & DME Supplies of Inverness, where Maurice and Anne Marie McDaniel worked, prosecutors have alleged. Between early 1999 and November 2000, the McDaniels illegally persuaded the couple to cash out various investments and insurance policies and give them the money, according to prosecutors.

FCAT: Across the county, thousands of third- through 10th-graders took the first installments of this year's Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, commonly known as the FCAT. Testing continues through Monday. FCAT is used to determine school grades and the distribution of school recognition money.

FOWLER ANNOUNCES: County Commission Chairman Jim Fowler announced he would seek a third term.

CRYSTAL RIVER POLICE: A divided City Council gave Crystal River police Chief Jim Farley clearance to spend $5,000 already budgeted to create a substation near Copeland Park.
