Sam Koleduk led Gulf back to the playoffs in his second season.

Sam Koleduk's strategy for success as at Gulf is largely the same as it was when he played there: score lots of goals.

Koleduk's school single-season scoring record got a scare this season, but that was perhaps the only downside for the second-year coach, who led the Buccaneers to 18 wins and their first playoff appearance in nine seasons.

"I didn't have to do a whole lot at times," said Koleduk, who had three of the county's top six scorers. "Trying to keep the kids motivated was a challenge, and at the beginning of the season, we had tons of injuries, but for the most part, the team played pretty well."

Senior Alex Maric finished with 41 goals, four shy of Koleduk's mark. Teammate Drew Roberts was second in the county with 18. Gulf (18-8-4) missed a conference title by a point and won a first-round playoff game on the road before losing at Jackonsville Bartram Trail.

Several key players will graduate, but a solid core returns, including Roberts, goalie Brandon King and Maric's twin brothers, Bosho and Novica, who showed flashes of Alex's talent as freshmen.

One of Koleduk's best memories came from late in the year, when fellow Bucs alumni started coming to games as Koleduk did after he left school. Koleduk had brought pride back to the program.

"When they all came back to watch, that was one of the best things," he said. "It had been so long since we'd been to the playoffs, so this was nice for the program."
