Country in the park

The granddaddy of Pinellas Park festivals began 12 years ago as a gift to neighbors to conclude Pride in the Park, the city's annual spring cleanup. Residents receive free building permits for home renovation projects such as one-room additions, new roofs, wooden decks and new driveways. The details

Day: Saturday

Hours: 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Place: England Brothers Band Shell and surrounding park, 52nd Street and 81st Avenue N.

Parking: Streets near the event; a free shuttle will run every 15 minutes from ParkSide mall, 7200 U.S. 19 N, St. Giles Church and the Pinellas Park Library lots. Handicapped parking is on the north side of City Hall on 52nd Street.

Crowd expected: 25,000

Cost: Admission and parking are free, but food, drink and some activities require money.

Who benefits: Each of the participating organizations keeps the proceeds. When you eat a Rotary hot dog or gulp a Kiwanis soda, for example, you help those groups' programs.

Kinds of food available (beside hot dogs and sodas) : Pinellas Park firefighters chuckwagon serving turkey legs, barbecued pork and kielbasa; Pinellas Park Elks Lodge 2217 serving grilled sausage, peppers and onions. No beer or alcohol will be available at this event.

Exhibits: To name just a few . . . the NASCAR display with the Dale Earnhardt No. 3 black Oreo GM Goodwrench Monte Carlo and the No. 8 Dale Earnhardt Jr. Budweiser car; "Francis," the 1925 American LaFrance engine belonging to the city's fire department; a new fire engine the city bought last year; the Pinellas Park/Mid-County Chamber of Commerce Business Expo and Job Fair; the Police Department's SWAT team, and K-9 and motorcycle units; the Mobile Educational Fishing Trailer sponsored by the city's Parks Division and the state Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Things to do: Dunk a police officer at the splash tent; take a horseback ride or pet some animals courtesy of the city of Pinellas Park Equine Riders group; participate in the firetruck pull; donate blood; climb a rock wall; carnival rides.

Music headliner: Shenandoah, a band with 11 albums, plus two Grammy awards in 1996; was named Country Music Association Vocal Group of the Year in 1991. Hits from the Alabama band include Church on Cumberland Road, Sunday in the South, If Bubba Can Dance, and the Grammy winner, Somewhere in the Vicinity of the Heart.

Other music: Hank Shaw and Cactus Creek, featuring five Tampa Bay musicians. One of those is Lee Ahlin, known locally for his musical compositions for American Stage's annual Shakespeare in the Park; Susan Lynn; Briar Hill.
