Lakewood takes home state title

LAKELAND -- They finally did it.

After four failed attempts in the state final, the Lakewood Spartans captured the elusive Class 4A boys state basketball championship with a 59-52 victory Saturday over Belle Glade Glades Central.

The Spartans were in control throughout and withstood a late Raider rally.

After Glades (27-8) got within 50-49 with four minutes left, Kevin Dorsey hit a 3-pointer and Brian Ligon scored inside as the Spartans (33-2) pulled away.

Lakewood failed to advance past the semifinals in 1985, '92, '97 and 2000.

"So this is what it feels like," Lakewood coach Dan Wright said moments after the victory.

Marcus Morrison, Ligon and Dorsey were named to the all-tournament team.

"It was just pure excitement at the end," Morrison. "What a feeling."
